Brewing great beer takes passion, dedication and a whole lot of humility. Luckily at Refuge Brewery we’ve been able to assemble an amazing team of brewers with all of these qualities. Now well into our second year of operation we’ve doubled our operation and currently run one of the largest breweries in Temecula Valley. Beers like Blood Orange Wit continue to be incredibly popular, even to the point of running us out of oranges last year! Rest assure though we’ve bought essentially all the blood oranges in the valley and are ready to brew exponentially more of our flagship beer this year.
We’re also very excited to introduce a new beer to complete our portfolio for 2014! Shelter 9 is a beer we’ve been wanting to brew for a while now. However being that it’s brewed with more hops then all out other distribution beers combined it was simple not fesable during our first year. But we spent some time last year quietly stock piling our favorite hop varieties, including Mosaic and Galaxy, in anticipation of catapulting Shelter 9 out of the tasting room. 2014 is posed to be an amazing year filled with great beer, good times, and more incredible adventures here at the brewery.

The tasting room is situated right in the middle of the brewery and allows people to experience beer and what goes into producing it. Often times patrons of the tasting room get a front row seat to the actual brewing process as our brewers are working!
The tasting room is also awesome because it truly lets you be apart of the brewery! We on any given time have up to 20 different beers on tap, may of them barrel aged in used whiskey and wine barrels. The tasting room is also used as the ground floor for our prototyping. It's not uncommon for us first to serve up small prototype batches to our patrons before we decide to brew a large scale production batch.
Here at Refuge we specialize in brewing handcrafted ales in the traditional Belgian style. The Refugee Tripel is a great showcase of Belgian brewing techniques in a balanced strong ale. The Illusion IPA blurs the line between a California IPA and a Belgain Ale. Although we specialize in Belgians, we don't let that limit our creativity. Apart from the Belgian style ales, you can find a variety of other beers including porters, brown ales, and California IPAs on rotation all year long.
The freshest tasting and easiest drinking beer in our lineup, and it also happens to be the best selling. By using over 200lbs of fresh blood oranges in every batch, we end up with a beer that explodes with flavor yet balances it’s sweetness with just a pinch of tartness. It’s this balance combined with an extraordinarily light wheat body that makes this brew perfect for any occasion, any time of the year.
Our oldest recipe on the books, Illusion IPA is all about balance and pushing our ability as brewers. It’s not any easy task to harness the intense pine and citrus flavors of hops with the funk and spice that comes with Belgian yeast, but that’s the DNA of this IPA.
Ahh Shelter 9 probably the beer our brewers drink the most of! We brew it with more hops then we probably can afford to, but the outcome is simply awesome! The hop bursting technique, or late hoping if you wish, allows the brew to absorb a huge amount of dank citrus peachy pine aroma and flavor while leaving a silky smooth bitterness. A hop heads dream beer.
The big boy of the line up, coming in just shy of 10% alcohol this beer pairs perfectly with red meat and wild game. By and large our most complex brew combining the deep notes of chocolate, clove, biscotte, and spiced dates. Hell we’ve even had some refer to this brew as down right sexy, we’d like to think so, but you can be the judge of that one.
Collecting used whiskey and wine barrels has become a little passion of ours. By taking our beers and aging them in these used barrels we are able to create some incredibly complex beers. Often we will even age on other ingredients such as fresh fruit and spices for some truly unique creations.
Because of the nature of using used barrels we will typically only do one barrel batches of each Barrel Aged beer.
We've got a lot of talent in our Brew Crew, So when we get some spare time from brewing our core beers we like to let them experiment. This level of freedom breeds some really exotic beers, but it also lets us continue to learn as much as we can about non traditional ingredients.
These beers are usually only made in 5 to 10 gallon batches and only available on tap in the tasting room.
Temecula Valley has long been known as home to some of the best Wineries in California. Often referred to as the Wine Country of Southern California, Temecula's number of family owned wineries is not rivaled anywhere else in southern California.
Now in 2014 growth in Micro Breweries has been tremendous. But better then the sheer growth of the market has been the collection of great beer coming out of the valley. Each brewery has been developing their own unique style, building a culture in the community as they grow. So again, like Temecula has been to the wineries, Temecula is quickly becoming a brewing town. This community of breweries is as dense as anywhere else in California, making it the perfect place for a little brewery hopping.
